Gulliver's Travels: Text and Study Guide ![]() Year 10+ This is a shortened edition of the full text of Gulliver's Travels accompanied by striking illustrations, stills from the award winning television film made in England by Channel 4, helpful textual annotations, imaginative activities and study suggestions to make a challenging eighteenth century text accessible to students. The first half of the book contains all four voyages - to Lilliput, Brobdingnag, Laputa and the country of the Houyhnhnms. The second half offers students detailed activities on the book and the film version - first in preparation for reading and then to help them to explore the four journeys in depth. Finally there are suggestions for comparative reading and coursework assignments. This is a versatile resource which could be used as an introduction to literary texts of the period or as a springboard for in-depth study. Guidance for studying screen adaptations is also included, as well as interviews with a screenwriter. In cutting Jonathan Swift's original, the editor has kept the essentials of the story while making it a more manageable reading proposition for students. The language of the original has been retained so that the punctuation and vocabulary is close to that of 1726. As with all modern editions, the typography and spelling have been modernised. The annotations that appear throughout the text provide a commentary on the narrative, supporting students in their reading of the book. These notes also highlight the structure of the voyages and identify places where links and patterns can be seen between one part of the book and another. Along with the stills and illustrations they serve to keep an engaged reading going, help to make students curious about Swift's world and ideas, and help to illustrate the ways in which those ideas can be read today. 244x170mm 176pp ISBN 0 907016 54 5 An English Centre imported title
