Where We've Been: Articles from the English and Media Magazine

Ed. Michael Simons
A teacher resource

This is a varied collection of articles from The English Magazine (re-titled The English & Media Magazine in 1990), the 'house journal' of The London English & Media Centre, first published in the Spring of 1979. The articles reflect the Centre's central concern with the integration and exploration of theory and practice. Where We've Been includes articles on the English Curriculum, Reading, Language Issues, Media and New Technologies.

While the context is British, the articles are of wider significance in terms of either their historical interest or their continuing relevance to current debates and practice. Complex issues are dealt with without condescension but with a lightness of touch suggested by the often witty titles - 'Will it end in Tiers? Shakespeare in the National Curriculum' by Jane Coles, for example. From Issue 1, the assumption that teachers would want to keep up to date with developments in literary and media theory and practice, cultural politics and linguistics is attested to by the presence of papers addressing the work of Stuart Hall, Raymond Williams, Noam Chomsky, Dell Hymes and Michael Halliday, and articles such as 'The Post-Structuralist Always Reads Twice' by Richard Exton published in 1982; 'Developing Tray: Imagining Good Software' (1985) by Bob Moy; Jenny Grahame's 'Criminal Records: TV Crime Series in the Classroom' (1988), Peter Medway's Technology and English: Language and Practical Applications' (also 1988), and more recently, 'Trouble for Arthur's Teacher: A Closer Look at Reading CD ROMs' by Judith Graham (1994).

This is an invaluable book for student teachers, teachers and lecturers, not only for its practical support for good classroom practice, but also for its insights into the development of English teaching over the last two decades.
