The English Curriculum: Media Years 7-9

A teacher resource

This book provides an introduction to English Departments developing a media education curriculum for Lower School students. It offers a range of suggestions for initiating departmental discussion; for curriculum planning and basic classroom strategies, and includes annotated teaching materials and ideas regarding areas of further development and study. Media Years 7 - 9 suggests two parallel strategies: an approach which integrates media activities into existing English work; and structured ‘stand-alone’ units of work which cover key areas of knowledge and understanding.

There are sections on:

  • beginning media education, which outlines the content and conceptual field of media education;
  • giving media a profile, which explores ways of extending existing units of work on literary texts to integrate a media approach;
  • five varieties of media unit, which provide an outline of different approaches to the construction of core units of media work and consider development and assessment of media learning.
The emphasis is on practical approaches which build on existing good practice and on the expertise students already have. It is an interesting, informative and practical book both for teachers new to media work and for those wishing to develop their expertise.

Review

"It is rare to find such a combination of experience, conceptual understanding and practical common sense. The real strength of this book is that it will make curriculum development entertaining and stimulating."

Julian Sefton-Green, Times Educational Supplement, June 1991.
"One of the most exhaustive considerations of media education to be published to date ... What makes this book different from some others dealing with media education is the feeling running through it that all ideas relate to actual and recent classroom experience. ... There should be one in every department."

Alun Hicks, Media Education Magazine, No: 16.
