Brother in the Land: Wide Reading

by Guy Dickens
Student book Year 10+

This study guide won the 1991 Times Educational Supplement’s Schoolbook Award. It was described by Dennis Hamley as ‘not only a comprehensive scheme of work for one book but a blueprint for others’.

Robert Swindell’s powerful novel about the aftermath of nuclear war has been used successfully with Years 10 and 11. This booklet has three main purposes. Firstly, it provides a range of support materials and suggested teaching activities for the use of Brother in the Land as a shared classroom text. Secondly, it offers ideas and routes for students who may wish to use the novel as a starting point for a ‘wider reading’ assignment. Thirdly, it suggests to students several productive ways of studying the same theme through their reading of related texts, such as When the Wind Blows, Children of the Dust and Z for Zachariah.

Review

"...expert combination of strategies which can only make this remarkable novel live even more sharply ... not only a comprehensive scheme of work for one one book but a blueprint for others".
