Macbeth [Study Guide]

Student book Year 9+

This popular booklet contains historical background on Macbeth and the Elizabethan Age presented in a lively, accessible form. An introduction to Shakespeare’s language is provided via an activity which gives four versions, including Cockney and Jamaican English (but not Strine!) of some lines of the play. Also included are ideas for preparing to read the play, and notes on each scene that can be used to support students’ reading. The stills illustrating the booklet are from the Thames Television/Royal Shakespeare Company production of Macbeth with Judy Dench and Ian McKellen and are used to stimulate work on dramatic interpretation and to encourage consideration of alternative readings of the play.

The second section provides invaluable support to students while reading the play. It follows the play, scene by scene, with the following notes:

  • 'The headline' - that attempts to give an idea of how the scene might be read;
  • 'Lines to look out for' which focuses attention on particular lines;
  • 'Questions' for talking and thinking about.
Each scene is illustrated by a ‘still’ to draw attention to Macbeth in production.

Once the play has been read, there is a wide variety of activities, including a guide to close reading. Attention is drawn to imagery and themes via enjoyable and thought-provoking approaches. Also provided is a range of written tasks which cater for the needs of the full ability range.
